An Address Verification System (AVS) is a fraud prevention process that’s used by businesses to confirm a user’s residential address by comparing their billing address, often the street number and ZIP or postal code, with the address registered with the credit card’s issuing bank. This helps prevent fraud, especially for merchants and e-commerce firms that often face the increasing risk of credit card fraud, such as card-not-present fraud.
The bank then returns a match result, allowing the merchant to decide whether to approve or decline a user’s transaction. It works alongside other fraud prevention measures and existing fraud detection systems like Shopify’s automated flagging of high-risk orders. That’s why using an Address Verification System also helps reduce the fraudulent chargeback rate.
