The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, or AAMVA in short, is a special US database used for driver’s license verification, which is why it’s referred to as the “AAMVA verification” process. Many Know Your Customer (KYC) service providers either specialize in AAMVA checks or US driver’s licenses as a type of ID document for document verification during the customer onboarding process. It happens before the user is accepted and can create an account on services like a fintech app, an iGaming platform, or, in more concrete cases, sharing mobility services like a car rental app.
Most companies that use AAMVA verification are regulated and required by law to conduct these checks to prevent fraud and the misuse of forged driver’s licenses. A common approach to this process is to combine at least two layers of verification. For example, to use a driver’s license check (document verification) and a cross-check with the AAMVA database (database verification) to see that the document is legitimate, valid, belongs to the same person who’s uploading the document remotely, and matches a legitimate database, in this case, AAMVA.
